Last week, as I strolled the streets of Harlem, I realized how much it truly inspires my creativity. The love grows stronger each time I rise with the day. My bedroom faces a main street and sits high above many bars and small businesses. The familiar morning noises keep me out of the clouds. Even in the winter, I search for the sun rising from behind the building across the street. I glance out and admire the many roofs of brownstones and new buildings alike. The clouds are different in Harlem. The city's rhythm goes to the beat of my drums.
The neighborhood inspires me beyond my work with Fanm Djanm. Harlem gives me permission to create a lot out of very little, and sometimes nothing at all. I remember how fast I used to walk when I first moved to New York City. I went with the flow because I figured that's what I had to do. Now, I find myself stopping more. Admiring old windows and arches and small yards. I admire the character of each brick, each section of paint peeling off an old, romantic door. I often stop in the middle of the street and look as far down as my vision can take me. I'll spot the high towers and buildings of Midtown, and be reminded that there's no other place I'd rather be than in Harlem.
Harlem also inspires the colors of my outfits. The other day, I spotted a green house tucked in a corner of 128th. It stood there, as colorful as ever, surrounded by brown buildings. It has an air of mystery, secrets, and history. It made go back to my closet to find something green and warm! And I caught this cozy green sweater looking right back at me...
