Fall floral and grey tones

November 02, 2016 in STYLE, NYC

I got this grey hat from my local hats store in Harlem about a week before my 30th birthday. I find pleasure in going in a men's shop to try on various hats. I always tip each hat to the side and stare at my profile for a little Paola drama. There's just something about buying things made for men, from men, that I love. I get this strange feeling of freedom and power. Is that weird?

Lately, I've been playing with contrast beyond just mixing and matching colors. That's why I always find men's clothing, vintage cuts, and bold prints attractive. As I get older, I love to push my imagination a bit. I find myself bridging eras, cultures, and colors while always making sure to focus on comfort above all else.

For this look,  I decided to play with texture and color, by contrasting a masculine hat with a very feminine kaftan. It's sexy. I love looks that bring mixed emotions out. This outfit made me feel vulnerable, yet bold and playful. The right combination of clothes can help me create stories in my head. The right article of clothing can transform my entire demeanor.

You know what else? In my ideal world, I wouldn't wear a slip underneath that kaftan. I would simply wear thong panties and nothing else.  I think this sheer kaftan is a stunning piece by itself. I imagine myself strolling through a garden with slip-on sandals and holding only a book. Or lounging on a chaise by a well-lit window over looking a courtyard.

This sheer kaftan screams freedom and sensuality. I've worn it before for a night out with skinny jeans and strappy sandals, and yet it becomes a completely different piece when layered with long pants. I also love how it pairs with over-the-knee boots. It shows just the right amount of skin and mystery. The bold floral embroidery dances gracefully on grey suede with movement. It's almost like poetry.

Dress: Zara; Rings: Fanm Djanm; Earrings: Riva Nyri; Boots: Stuart Weitzman; Bag: Thrifted; Hat: Harlem Flamekeepers
